Grameen-Jameel was established in 2003 and incorporated in 2007 as a joint venture between Grameen Foundation and ALJ Foundation, a subsidiary of Abdul Latif Jameel Group. The company alleviates poverty by providing technical and financial assistance to microfinance institutions.

About Initiative

Grameen-Jameel is a leading microfinance institution in the Arab world, and is seeking to improve and develop efficiencies of microfinance institutions in the region and to provide them technical support. Grameen-Jameel is conducting studies in the area of microfinance in cooperation with several international organizations.


As of November 2010, Grameen-Jameel has provided financial guarantees of over US $24 million which has facilitated local currency financing of US $53 million to nearly 520,000 microfinance clients through its partner microfinance institutions in the MENA region. Grameen-Jameel operates in nine countries, which include Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey, and Yemen.
